London is one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities in the world. The capital of the United Kingdom is a multinational and multicultural megacity: over 8 million people live there. London is an extremely important economic and cultural center of Europe, as well as an administrative center of the state: British Parliament and the Queen’s residence, Buckingham Palace, are situated there.

Лондон – один из самых красивых и процветающих городов мира. Столица Соединённого Королевства – мультинациональный и мультикультурный мегаполис: там живут более 8 миллионов человек. Лондон является чрезвычайно важным экономическим и культурным центром Европы, а также административным центром государства: там находятся британский Парламент и резиденция королевы, Букингемский дворец.

Every part of London has its own international role: the huge trading port, the district City (business and financial “heart” of Europe), Soho where entertainments, musical and theatrical life are concentrated, Fleet Street with numerous newspaper and magazine offices, etc. London has improved banking system and infrastructure. It is famous for its transport (“cabs”, red double-decker buses, and the oldest subway in the world). London universities have strong educational traditions.

Founded by Romans in 43 AC, later London turned into the capital of the independent England, and then of the empire uniting England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Quickly growing, it was especially powerful in the Tudors’ epoch when became the hotbed of religious Reformation and during the reign of Queen Victoria (the 19th century) – as a great cultural and industrial center. London survived plague epidemics, fires, and bombings of the World War II, but was constantly reborn.
